Ocean Network Express (ONE), in a major sustainability initiative, has commenced a trial to harness wind propulsion as an eco-friendly solution for the maritime industry. Collaborating with Dutch wind-powered technology specialists Econowind, ONE aims to demonstrate the potential of wind propulsion in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and fuel consumption.

Pioneering Sustainable Shipping Solutions
The trial involves installing two VentoFoil containers, resembling airplane wings, aboard the MV Kalamazoo, a 1,036 TEU feeder vessel owned by NORSE UK and managed by Goodwood Ship Management. The VentoFoils are designed to capture wind energy, offering considerable fuel savings and reducing GHG emissions.

Advanced Technology for Enhanced Efficiency
Each VentoFoil is equipped with a smart suction system to optimise airflow and maximise propulsion. These autonomous units can be operated from the ship’s bridge, adjusting to wind speed and direction, and are capable of generating up to 400 kilowatts, potentially reducing fuel usage by 5%.

Commitment to Environmental Goals
Hiroki Tsujii, Managing Director at ONE, emphasises the company’s commitment to minimising environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This trial represents a significant step towards exploring innovative and sustainable maritime solutions.

Comprehensive Research and Long-Term Potential
Scheduled to begin in January 2024 and last for six months, the trial will provide comprehensive research on the functionality of the VentoFoils. ONE plans to collect data on fuel use, emissions reduction, and overall operational efficiency. The results will be instrumental in evaluating wind propulsion’s long-term viability as a sustainable shipping alternative.
