Fuel efficiency of Wärtsilä 31 engine a key consideration for newbuild Canadian Polar Icebreaker

Technology group Wärtsilä will supply the engines for a new Canadian Coast Guard Polar Icebreaker. The ship is being designed and built at Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards and will be the flagship of the Canadian Coast Guard’s icebreaking fleet. Because of the long operational range required for the vessel’s employment in arctic waters, fuel efficiency was a prime design consideration in the selection of the Wärtsilä 31 engine. The Wärtsilä 31 engine has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine and was therefore considered an obvious choice. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in Q3 2023.

The 158 metre-long multi-mission Polar Icebreaker will operate under PC2 conditions with four 16-cylinder and two 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 31 engines, delivering 47 MW of power. The engines will be fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems for IMO Tier III environmental compliance. Wärtsilä will also supply the centre shaft line with a stainless-steel ice-class propeller, as well as Wärtsilä’s NACOS Platinum navigation system.

“Wärtsilä has a fine track record and years of experience in delivering high-class marine technologies including recently delivering the propulsion equipment for the Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV), plus the diesel generator sets for the Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel (OOSV) built at Seaspan for the Canadian Coast Guard,” commented Leo Martin, Senior Vice President – Programs, Seaspan Shipyards.

“The fuel efficiency of the Wärtsilä 31 engine was a determining factor in the award of this prestigious contract. However, equally important was our project delivery experience and service support across Canada. Furthermore, our previous cooperation with both the Canadian Coast Guard and Seaspan has been very successful, and we are honoured to be again working with them,” said Simon Riddle, General Manager, Naval Sales – Wärtsilä.

The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled to be delivered to the yard in 2025. When built, the new vessel will be the Canadian Coast Guard’s largest icebreaker and will replace ‘CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent’, which is due to retire at the end of the decade after 60 years of service. Seaspan Shipyards is known as a world class builder of high technology ice class vessels.

The new web-based forecasting tool is designed to assist Brittany Ferries in meeting Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) requirements. It uses a theoretical model calibrated with actual performance data to predict fuel consumption and emissions for each ship in the fleet. This advanced application enables Brittany Ferries to plan optimised and efficient fleet-wide operations, thus reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and operational costs.

BVS developed ship-specific energy models for the software, integrating ports and route data to support improved forecasting. ABB Supplies World-First Maritime Megawatt Charging System for Auckland Transport’s Electric Ferries

ABB, a leader in electrification and automation technologies, has announced a landmark contract with Auckland Transport (AT) to deliver the maritime world’s first megawatt charging system (MCS) for electric ferries. This pioneering initiative is a significant leap in maritime electrification and aligns with Auckland’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Revolutionising Electric Ferry Operations

ABB’s MCS will revolutionise the recharging process for electric ferries in Auckland, using a standardised interface common to both trucking and aviation. This advancement is expected to lower entry barriers in the electric ship market and enhance competitiveness against traditional fossil-fueled vessels.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

The new electric ferries are set to significantly reduce Auckland Transport’s annual fuel consumption by about 1.5 million litres, leading to an estimated decrease of around 4,000 metric tons of CO2e emissions annually. Murray Burt, Chief Engineer at Auckland Transport, highlighted the importance of this project, stating, “It was critical to combine ABB’s global support capabilities and strong local presence for a project that will transform Auckland’s ferry services.”

Fleet Enhancement and Operational Efficiency

AT has ordered two 200-seat all-electric ferries and two 300-passenger hybrid-electric ferries, expected to be operational between 2024 and 2025. This move is set to position AT as the largest electric ferry fleet operator in the Southern Hemisphere by 2030. The MCS’s ability to deliver over 3 megawatts of direct current power is essential for meeting the high-power demands and rapid turnaround times of the ferry service.

The MAN 175DF-M is designed for both new-build and retrofit variants, offering versatility and accessibility for a range of maritime vessels. Optimised for diesel-mechanical and diesel-electric propulsion, this engine is aimed at achieving maximum efficiency and a high methanol share across various applications and load profiles. The engine has been awarded a ‘fuel ready’ certificate by DNV, indicating its readiness for widespread adoption of dual-fuel methanol technology.

Florian Keiler, Head of High Speed at MAN Energy Solutions, highlighted the MAN 175D’s competitive edge in sustainability and efficiency, noting its low fuel and lube-oil consumption, and long overhaul times – all factors that contribute to a minimized environmental footprint. The introduction of methanol combustion is seen as the next critical step in the evolution of future fuels, including 100% bio-fuels.

Innovative Technology and Customer-Centric Development
The 175D engine, a recent addition to MAN Energy Solutions’ high-speed maritime sector, plays a crucial role in the company’s strategy to develop a methanol-ready engine portfolio. Building on the success of its two-stroke engines, MAN Energy Solutions has applied its expertise to optimise its four-stroke engines. This includes successful single-cylinder testing, which will inform the development and validation of dual-fuel PFI (Port Fuel Injection) technology for the methanol-ready 175D engine.

Keiler further explained that the development of the 175DF-M was guided by customer feedback, emphasising the importance of the dual-fuel principle, reliability, efficiency, high methanol share, competitive lifecycle costs, and maximum output. The PFI combustion technology was chosen as the most favorable option, with fundamental combustion development set to begin in 2024 and a first field test of the methanol engine planned for 2026.

Environmental Impact and Global Operations
The PFI technology is recognised as one of the most advanced in the market. It targets the highest methanol share over a wide power range, achieving the highest cylinder output in its class. Particularly in diesel-electric multi-engine plants, this optimisation will allow engines to operate at optimal load points, further enhancing methanol utilisation. Notably, when using biofuels, the MAN 175DF-M’s carbon footprint could be reduced to zero, while retaining full fuel flexibility for worldwide operations.
