Thales, a global leader in defence and security technologies, has been selected by the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) to outfit the French Navy’s new offshore patrol vessels with cutting-edge maritime surveillance technologies. This development marks a significant enhancement in the naval capabilities of the French Navy, aligning with the strategic goals set out in the new Military Planning Law (LPM) for 2024-2030.

Integrating Advanced Surveillance Technologies
Under this contract, Thales will equip seven of the French Navy’s patrol vessels with its sophisticated Bluewatcher hull sonar, the new compact multi-mission surveillance radar NS50, and its Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) TSA 3522 system. This suite of technologies will empower the vessels with unparalleled capabilities in both active and passive surveillance, ensuring robust defence against underwater threats and effective aerial and surface surveillance.

Enhancing Naval Operational Capabilities
The integration of Thales’ advanced systems is expected to significantly boost the operational efficiency and situational awareness of the French Navy. The Bluewatcher hull sonar provides a critical edge in anti-submarine warfare, while the NS50 radar offers multi-mission capabilities, enhancing the vessels’ ability to perform various surveillance and reconnaissance tasks. The IFF TSA 3522 system ensures reliable identification of friendly forces, crucial for maintaining situational awareness and operational security.

Aligning with France’s Military Aspirations
This contract is a key part of France’s ongoing efforts to modernise its naval forces. It aligns with the objectives of the LPM, which emphasises the need for advanced technologies to maintain a strategic edge in maritime security. The potential addition of three more vessels equipped with Thales’ systems post-2030 further underscores the long-term commitment to bolstering naval capabilities.

Conclusion
Thales’ selection to equip the French Navy’s new patrol vessels represents a significant advancement in maritime defence technology. It not only reinforces the Navy’s operational capabilities but also reflects the strategic vision of France’s defence sector. This partnership is a testament to Thales’ expertise in maritime surveillance technologies and its role in enhancing national and global maritime security.
